Subject	Long term danger of bad VTC spring?

Message	Based on reading many posts, I have narrowed down possible causes of the rattling sound that has been coming from my upper timing belt cover. I think it's a bad intake cam VTC spring. Since its been doing this for more than 6years, 60k miles, I was wondering if there any great risks of not fixing this? I just did the timing belt and the last thing I want to do is take everything apart again. I can live with the noise. What the heck is this spring for anyway?
